Almonds grow on a tree (same family as the peach), the kernal (nut) is surrounded by a shell (soft or hard depedning on variety) then surrounded by a hull.
Growers harvest the kernel, the shell and the hull, all are used for many purposes.
Normally, bees must cross-pollinate the almond blossum in February, carrying pollen from one variety almond to another.
Bees have a strong union contract. Daylight only, no wind or rain and temperature above 54 degrees.
There have been hundreds of almond varieties propagated over thousands of years. Currently growers propagate about 25 verieties with nonpareil being the most popular.
All almonds grow on rootstock from a different tree, such as peach, plumb or almond hybrids.
Almonds were one of the first foods awarded a qualified health claim in the US
There are over 100 published research papers detailing real health benefits almonds, in particular their effect on heart health, diabetes and weight management.
